Leprechaun Play Dough!

Last month we made pink Valentine's play dough.  This month we made green, peppermint, St. Patrick's Day play dough.  I used a different recipe this time.  The ingredients were pretty much the same.  The big difference was that you don't have to cook it on the stove top.  You just put all of the ingredients into a bowl, and instead of adding cold water, you add boiling water!
It really all comes together when you are kneading it.  At first, I thought it was going to be grainy, because it didn't feel like the salt was dissolving.  However, after kneading the dough for a while, everything came together great!
I did read a tip on another blog that said to wait until the dough is cool to add coloring and any scent.  They said the dough will take on the smell and color better.  I've never done it this way, but will try next time.  I got the original recipe here.
No Cook Play Dough
-2 Cups Flour
-4 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar
-2 Tablespoons Cooking Oil
-1 Cup of Salt
-2 Cups of Boiling Water
-food coloring, glitter, any type of extract for smell (all optional)

*Put all ingredients into a bowl and mix.  Turn out onto table and knead.
*Update*  I opened up the play dough after a few days and it already feels grainy and doesn't have the smooth texture I love.  I am going to stick with my all time favorite recipe but maybe try the no cook method with the ingredients.  I'll let you know how it turns out!

Best Play Dough EVER
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar
Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.
Final Update--I tried my favorite recipe without heating it on the stovetop and it didn't work.  BUT--it was totally worth the 3 minutes on the stovetop for the smooth texture I love!!

  2. You can keep in in a ziploc bag or tupperware container. I've heard it keeps for at least a month. I'll let you know.

  3. Oh, adding peppermint sounds fun!! As a small one myself, I have a distinct memory of tasting my mom's homemade playdough--I credit that to the reason I still loathe sourdough bread to the day. LOL! Peppermint should would have made it taste better.

  4. Funny! I was reminded yesterday by a friend that you can use Kool-Aid packets for scents too.
